What better way to celebrate a true British hero than with a great pint of beer?

To mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin last year, we produced Natural Selection, a premium India Pale Ale with a flowery nose where the component ingredients have all been carefully selected to illustrate Darwin’s legacy.

Charles Darwin was a scientist whose book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, gave an explanation for the diversity of living things -the theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. At the time of publication in 1859, Darwin’s theory aroused anger and controversy but today, evolution is overwhelmingly accepted as the theory that underpins all modern biology.

Staff from Newcastle’s Centre for Life came up with the idea of the commemorative beer and the Centre teamed up with the Darwin Brewery in Sunderland to produce it.

Established in 1994 the Darwin Brewery has grown steadily over the last ten years from humble beginnings at Brewlab at the University of Sunderland, to become one of the most respected micro-breweries in the north of England.
