WANTED: Local Inventors and Crafters for Maker Faire 2010! Only fifteen exclusive places left.

Local Inventors, artists, crafters, tinkerers, boffins, DIY scientists, hackers and engineers are being sought by organisers to showcase their crazy creations at Maker Faire, the international creative craft and science event of the year.

Maker Faire comes to Newcastle on Saturday 13 until Sunday March 14, as the headline weekend of Newcastle ScienceFest 2010 (March 12 – 21), a 10-day festival of unique experiences. The hotly anticipated event will take place at Centre for Life and Discovery Museum and will see renowned DIY and technology enthusiasts from across the UK, Europe and the US showcasing their offbeat inventions, celebrating individual inventiveness and grass roots originality in a two-day interactive family event.

Over 50 ‘Makers’ from across the globe have been hand-picked to exhibit at this year’s event, and organisers are now in search of 15 of the best regional creative businesses and / or crafters / inventors to complete the showcase, showing off their weird and wacky inventions, and demonstrating the originality and creativity that exists here in the North East.

This is second time Newcastle will host the Maker Faire, which visited the UK for the first time in February 2009, seeing over 7000 people from across the country enjoy a fun packed weekend featuring over 50 Makers from across the globe at Centre for Life.

In search of North East Makers, ScienceFest Manager Marissa Buckingham, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for creative businesses and individuals to make new contacts, meet the media and test public reaction to their products, designs and skills. As well as exhibiting in the Maker Showcase, Makers have the option of taking to the stage for the Maker presentations, an opportunity for Makers to explain how they built, hacked, knitted or otherwise created their contraptions and inventions.

“We are looking for the very best talent to show-off the rich creative spirit that exists here in North East England. Everyone is welcome to apply whether you’re a creative business, a non-profit craft group, or someone who invents things in their garden shed. The hunt is on!”
