Fancy volunteering at ScienceFest 2010?
Would you shave half your head, hula hoop in front of an audience, test your pain threshold, get a tattoo or knit a jumper for a tree? If so, Newcastle ScienceFest wants to hear from you.
Organisers for one of the region’s most exciting festivals are calling out for volunteers to take part in a range of unusual, thought provoking and sensational events taking place at venues across Newcastle in March 2010.
Newcastle ScienceFest is looking for people to take part in a 10-day bumper programme of unique experiences, taking place from March 12 – 21. The festival is designed to entertain and educate in equal measure, and registration for this year’s exciting volunteer programme is now underway, calling for volunteers to be part of one of Newcastle’s most exciting festivals.
As part of this year’s event, organisers are looking for volunteers who will to go the extra mile for science, whether by agreeing to be tattooed in front of an awestruck audience, or by shaving off half of their hair in front of an infrared camera to measure heat loss. Other activities include hula hooping at ScienceFest’s Super Hoopla launch event, knitting and crafting as part of a guerrilla knitting project around Newcastle city centre, and working alongside international inventors and tech experts at Maker Faire, the festival’s headline weekend event.
Last year volunteers helped international Diet Coke and Mentos experts EepyBirds create a giant geyser of Diet Coke. With the help of over 5000 mints and over 1000 litres of Diet Coke, volunteers saw fountains of fizz erupt over 25 feet into the air in front of an excited audience.
ScienceFest Manager Marissa Buckingham, said: “We are looking for a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers to join us for the next Newcastle ScienceFest in March. As well as the more unusual volunteer roles, there are plenty of opportunities to gain experience in event management, science communication and marketing, as well as making new friends and having fun.”
Newcastle ScienceFest is delivered in partnership with the Centre for Life, Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums, Newcastle Science City, Newcastle University, Newcastle City Council and culture10 as part of NewcastleGateshead’s world-class programme of festivals and events.
