Newcastle Science Festival

About Us

Newcastle ScienceFest is a playful, experience-led festival that takes place over 12 cultural venues.

The 6-day programme is an imaginative mix of special events, installations and film screenings, designed to celebrate creativity within science and develop the North East’s relationship with a subject that is not only boundlessly fascinating but vital to our future prosperity and quality of life.

In 2011, the festival will take place 12-17 March and is delivered in partnership between Centre for Life, Tyne&Wear Museums, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Newcastle Science City, Beacon North East, Newcastle University and Northumbria University.

Newcastle has hosted a science festival since 2003. In 2009, the festival was re-launched as part of a three-year strategy funded by Regional Development Agency One North East.

Since 2009, over 80,000 adults, families and school children have participated in festival events and over £1million worth of positive media coverage has been generated.

The festival’s programme has included many international firsts including the UK Maker Faire and the UK premiere of internet sensation Eepy Bird who exploded 1000 litres of Diet Coke and 5000 Mentos Mints in five spectacular choreographed performances.
